A CHARMING WIDOW WITH A TROUBLING HISTORY
As if by magic, Annette Berowne seems capable of dazzling men from the moment she meets them. But when Annette becomes the primary suspect in her husband's poisoning death, she arouses entirely different feelings. Now some men feel sorry for her while others are convinced she's guilty.
PROVIDES TWO DETECTIVES WITH A MYSTERY OF SEDUCTION AND MURDER.
Jack Gibbons is a by-the-book, rising star at Scotland Yard. His friend Phillip Bethancourt is a smart, devil-may-care type with a good heart and a razor-sharp sense of people. When they reach the Berowne manor in Surrey, with its colorful coterie of staff and family, Bethancourt is strangely immune to Annette's charms. As the two men delve into the case, Gibbons is sure Annette is an innocent damsel in distress. But Bethancourt is only certain of this: his earnest friend is falling in love-with a woman whose lovers keep finding ways to die.

Synopsis
Making a striking debut, Chan introduces two intriguing sleuths in a brand-new series. DS Jack Gibbons is aided by his best friend Phillip Bethancourt in an investigation where the prime suspect is wealthy, dangerous, and irresistible.
Synopsis
Jack Gibbons is an ambitious young detective sergeant at Scotland Yard, and his best friend is Jack's own personal Peter Wimsey, the charismatic and wealthy man-about-town Philip Bethancourt, who likes to tag along on Gibbons' more interesting investigations.
His latest case certainly deserves Philip's attention: Geoffrey Berowne has been poisoned and everyone believes his much-younger wife Annette is guilty--especially since her two previous husbands also died under suspicious circumstances--but no one can prove it. A closer look provides more suspects--Geoff's curmudgeonly sister-in-law, who resented his new wife; and his beleaguered son and unhappy daughter-in-law, for starters. But everything keeps coming back to the alluring widow, who, to Philip's alarm, seems to have turned her charms on Jack. Can they solve the case before Jack becomes her next victim?
