In a recent editorial published in the New York Times, Tenzin Gyatso,
better known as the fourteenth Dalai Lama, discussed the recent findings of
Western neuroscientists. Confirming the claims of a 2,500 year old tradition,
these scientists found that Buddhist meditation literally changes the physical
structure of the brain, transforming disturbing emotional states hatred,
anger, fear into positive ones: peace, joy, compassion. His aim was to
demonstrate that one need not become a Buddhist in order to make use of the
practical benefits of Buddhism, which is often described as a "science
of the mind." As the Dalai Lama has written elsewhere: "This is my
simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy.
Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness."
Live in a Better Way collects six lectures given in India over the past
ten years, each an eloquent, accessible introduction to the practicalities of
Buddhist practice. These talks will be of particular interest to Buddhists of
all stripes. They will also be useful for anyone simply looking to create a
happier life for themself and to contribute to a less contentious future for
humanity. Martin, Powells.com
