Reminiscent of Among Friends by Letty Cottin Pogrebin's and Just Friends by Lillian Rubin's, both published in 1985, this dynamic popular nonfiction book shows the impact our friends have on how long we live and how successful we are during our lifetime. Friendshifts( is the culmination of 15 years of study and hundreds of interviews and surveys by sociologist and author Dr. Jan Yager, who found that while healthy friendships can help you self-esteem, lower your stress level, and generally improve the quality of your life, harmful friends can put your life and health in jeopardy.
Friendshifts( is the word coined by Dr. Yager to reflect the way friendships change and shift as we go from one stage in our life to another, from childhood to being single, to marriage, having children, retirement, or widowhood.
Picking up where Dale Carnegie's best -- seller How to Win Friends Influence People left off, Friendshifts( often friendship skills and principles that will benefit all of the key intimate relationships in your life, such as how to get along with your spouse, your boss, your children, and your siblings, as well as your work-related associations. In Friendshifts, ( Dr. Yager shows how to recognize and deal with negative or harmful friendships. She also offers guidance on how to be a better friend and discusses how casual friends, especially at work, are sometimes better than dose or best friends. This comprehensive book covers everything from friendship patterns, how and why friendships begin and are maintained, to coping with various kinds of endings (because of conflicts as well as the death of a friend).
An important finding in this book refers to Dr. Yager's original researchover the bust two years with several dozen survivors of childhood and adolescent sexual abuse. Another interesting finding, based on Dr. Yager's survey of 257 human resource managers was that the men had twice as many friends in all categories (best, close, or casual) than the women in comparable jobs. Yager's book explores why that might be and why women might want to do something about it to enhance their careers and work and personal satisfaction.
