Synopses & Reviews
Journal displays Julie Delporte's organic and immediate drawings that utilize an uncanny sense of color and composition to illustrate their intimate, diarist narratives. Cataloging an emotional breakup, an artist's residency, and the anxieties and joys of everyday life, Delporte's elegant illuminated diary is a private life made public and poetic.
Review
A thoughtful take on the day to day life of the artist, rendered in simple and beautiful colored pencils.” Lucas Adams,
Publishers WeeklyAbsolutely engaging and affecting in its simplicity, and so, so relatable.” Short Run, Bitch Magazine
Delportes pages are gorgeously rendered in soft, radiantly colored pencils that belie the quiet grief at their core.” Rob Kirby, The Comics Journal
If you've ever been in a protracted low place, or are just fascinated with how the mind parses significance in a struggle for survival, Delporte's lovely "Journal" will speak strongly to you.” John Seven, North Adams Transcript
At its very best moments, Journal becomes indistinguishable from poetryand there are, as the reader will discover, many such moments.” Publishers Weekly
As one would expect, a book published by Koyama Press looks great, as the key to its success is the brightness of the color contrasting with the sadness she [Delporte] feels while evoking childhood delight in drawing.” Rob Clough, High Low
Im already a big fan of Julies work, and this book did not disappoint at all
I dont think anyone makes color comics like Julie. She draws directly with colored pencils in non-mimetic colors that are well balanced.” Derik Badman
Joined with the lush reproduction of the books design, the overall effect transcends its surface pleasures: a pleasant diaristic combination of comics, elementary school student workbook and impressionist painting. Super inviting and superbly engaging.” BK Munn, Sequential
"Theres a quiet sincerity to Delportes work that makes me very glad shes making it." Kevin Czap, Comix Cube
"Drawn directly in color, Delportes short stories read like a handwritten letter from a dear friend. They are in French with translations in the post so there is a nice disconnect for me where I just stare at the page and soak it all in sort of understanding bits and pieces of it thru the images and then reading the translation. Usually the stories are one or two pages and feel like poems. But good poems written by that same old dear friend. Totally my cup of tea. Check it out." Frank Santoro, Storyeyville (Picturebox, 2007), co-creator of Cold Heat (Picturebox, 2009), The Comics Journal
