We're all done with the remodeling, but step carefully just in case there's a pothole we missed, rebar jutting out of an INK Q&A, or a couple of wires dangling from the Calendar of Events. You should have no trouble finding our interview with The Things between Us author Lee Montgomery and our signed first editions of Conservatives without a Conscience. You may have to look a bit deeper for our New Arrivals, Author Essays, and, yes, Fup. Store Cat — but duck your head under the pipes and you should emerge without many bruises.

The Things between Us Lee Montgomery's heartbreaking, lyrical, and often hilarious memoir, The Things between Us, is the alternately wrenching and riotous story of a family reuniting as one of its own is dying. Publishers Weekly calls it "a tender portrait of modern death and real American families."

featured interview
Lee Montgomery As The Things between Us begins, Lee Montgomery's father has been diagnosed with a tumor in his stomach. Her remarkable memoir tracks the next eight months, as Monty's fight against cancer brings a broken family together for the first time in decades. She "perfectly captures a middle-aged rite of passage," Kirkus raves. An executive editor at Tin House magazine, Montgomery "breathes new life into the dysfunctional family memoir with clean, vivid writing laced with a bitter bite" (Variety).

The dog days of summer are upon us — not that we'd notice since we've had record high temperatures in Portland pretty much all summer long. Frankly, the heat waves have us worried about global warming, so we're doing a little more active investigation into the matter. We're still trying to reconcile the fact that we read Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth while sitting inside an air-conditioned coffee shop, feeling the entire time that we've been caught in a vicious circle.

Fup. Store Cat. A brief compendium of grievances against the staff of Powell's Technical Books, compiled by Fup on Saturday morning, August 19, 2006:
Now and then, Lisa ought to listen to jazz or lo-fi, indie rock instead of honky tonk. Collier talks an awful lot about camellias. Library deaccessions are not quite as fascinating as Ryan would have you believe. The cat box should be cleaned as often as the bathrooms; think about it, Fup has guests, too. And whoever decided to remove the short shelving units at the corner of Couch and Park — she's not sure whether to blame Trent or Clyde or Stanley or Dave — destroyed the best nap space in the store.
In the guest bed across the room, Bagheera lightly snored. Fup tried to wake Bear beside her, but he'd have none of it; he likes to sleep in on the weekend.

She shivered. She thought the gratitude might spill out her eyes and ears. For the obvious reasons, yes: shelter, food, and always free roam of the store. All these years a full bowl of water. Every day scratches behind the ear. A guest bed!

She was being sentimental. Maybe she was getting soft. She decided to make the list. It didn't work. Who could imagine Lisa without her honky tonk, or Collier without camellias? Who would want to? Ryan loved his work, the cat box was plenty clean, the open bank of windows let in welcome light. Hours still before the store would open, Fup set out for a stroll around the neighborhood. A thousand kindnesses, and she couldn't even manage a complaint.
