Dave: IMG Jim Lynch Makes Landscape Art... Out of Text

jimlynchIf Carl Hiaasen set one of his novels on a residential stretch of boundary line between British Columbia and Washington, or if Richard Russo's characters had relatives in the Pacific Northwest, the result might be something like Jim Lynch's Border Songs. Continue »

The gruff veteran detective scowled at us through the gloom, his face an impressive collection of wrinkles. We studied the line-up through the two-way mirror, struggling to make a heartbreaking decision. Interviewee William Gibson spooked us with his intense gaze; even though he couldn't see us, he seemed to be staring right into our hearts. Wesley Stace (By George) hummed to himself as if he were in the comfort of his own home, while essayists Elyn Saks (The Center Cannot Hold) and Thrity Umrigar (If Today Be Sweet) shifted restlessly; INK Q&A subject Amy Bloom (Away) yawned with indifference, and guest bloggers Michael Marshall (The Intruders) and Laura Moriarty (The Rest of Her Life) cast defiant sneers. "Which one is the best writer?" the detective demanded again, at which point we broke down, sobbing helplessly. To pick only one would be the true crime.

FEATURED INTERVIEW
William GibsonThe Washington Post calls Spook Country "a devastatingly precise reflection of the American zeitgeist....Gibson takes another large step forward and reaffirms his position as one of the most astute and entertaining commentators on our astonishing, chaotic present." In a starred review, Publishers Weekly calls it "one of Gibson's best." And they're right; if you haven't read William Gibson before, Spook Country might be the ideal place to start. Set a few years ago in an uncanny America, one which seems simultaneously eerily familiar and utterly foreign, Spook Country weaves a complex mystery through the eyes of three very different characters navigating through the web of money and influence in our post-9/11 world. In this interview, William Gibson discusses Spook Country, writing, Voodoo, and reveals his secret dream job.

Powell's used book buyer Kirsten Berg writes a bi-weekly blog post on the world of rare books.

CARE AND FEEDING OF YOUR BOOKS
Occasionally, when people buy rare or collectible books from us, they'll ask: Does this book need any special care?

The fact that they ask is an indication that the book is going to a good home. Too often we see books that have been treated poorly; stored in damp cardboard boxes in a garage or shed, bent or warped, and coated with filth.

Am I exaggerating? Not a bit. The picture to the right shows the mold and water damage suffered by a book that was improperly stored for several years. See the wavy shadow cast by the pages? They have been warped by water. This book is no longer a book — it is garbage. (Though I say "garbage," here at Powell's we recycle books and they are pulped and made into paper once again. I think of it as a form of reincarnation.)

This book doesn't smell so pleasant, either. (I'll share a tip about curing a book of a bad smell in a future posting.)

Even if you store your books in the house, which is of course warm and dry, don't just pile them in a bin and think that your job as caretaker is done. In this photo, these improperly stacked books are being bent and stressed in harmful ways. Books are not contortionists.

AUGUST 28: Tales from the Oregon Ducks Sideline
Tales from the Oregon Ducks Sideline Brian Libby's Tales from the Oregon Ducks Sideline takes the reader through a fun-filled trip of Oregon's gridiron history, with compelling and anecdotal stories from the program's start in 1894 to the current era. Off-the-field stories, such as the team's much-talked-about uniform designs by Nike, are also part of this first-of-a-kind book about Oregon Ducks football.

AUGUST 31: Wizard Rock: Whomping Willows and the Parselmouths
Harry Potter What better way to end a summer of Harry Potter mania than with a wizard rock festival at Powell's. Wizard rock, of course, is the musical craze in which rock bands play songs about (who else?) Harry Potter. Join us for the synth-stylings of Seattle's The Parselmouths ("Voldemort Fangirl") and the folkier sound of Providence's The Whomping Willows ("Draco and Harry").

Fup. Store Cat.

Tourists swarming Pearl District sidewalks. City streets crawling with cars. Another Oregon summer. Fup scoots along the edge of buildings, over stoops and around planters, minding doors and clumsy feet as she passes each threshold, wondering foremost whether Ryan had any luck on the river — will there be fish for the party tonight? — when she hears someone call her name.

"Fup?"

The voice familiar. A young woman's, somewhere ahead along the block.

Birch woods. The stonemason's chimney. Mosquitoes around the tire swing. Sisters in pigtails.

"1991," Fup will tell her guests this evening back at the store. Not for the first time, they'll do the math and marvel. "Penny lived down the road in Maine."

But in the moment, here on Flanders Street, before Fup identifies her old neighbor — despite shorter hair, smarter clothes, and contacts (Fup assumes) in place of her sibling's hand-me-down frames, it's indisputably Penny — her legs nearly give out, her head swirls close to bursting. Sixteen years bridged in an instant, by a word she's heard thousands of times, her own name. Across a continent, through a life's collected memories. All it took was a voice.
