Miss Gretchen, I must bashfully confess I had somehow forgotten all about this year's Rooster tournament and my conquest of the Book Bloggers' Betting Pool. Thank you for rewawakening that glorious memory! Which is why this is my favorite: http://www.powells.com/blog/?p=1958 Because I love nothing more than being able to gloat! Carla, I only wish Stephen Colbert had been man enough to accept my challenge. Or that his assistants had been men/women enough to pass it on. Or that perhaps his producers hadn't decided it wouldn't be as interesting as Colbert trying to run for president and getting ballot-blocked. Either way, my unanswered call lingers in the blogosphere like the awkward silence after a party joke whose punchline earns no laughter.

My favorite book news story of the year was the publication of the original scroll for On The Road on the 50th anniversary of the publication of the book.
