Review-a-Day

Imposters

by Review-a-Day, March 26, 2006 12:00 AM
Female Chauvinist Pigs: Women and the Rise of Raunch Culture by Ariel Levy, a review from Boldtype by Larissa N. Dooley.

"In an age when porn star Jenna Jameson's memoir climbs the best-seller list, Olympic athletes pose naked for Playboy, mothers bring their daughters to 'cardio striptease' classes at the local gym, and primetime TV features the Victoria's Secret fashion show ??? that is, in an age of raunch culture ? women are claiming to be more liberated than ever. Read the entire Boldtype review.

Hi Shae, I administer the Review a Day and think I can answer this for you. The Sunday Review host for the last six weeks has been Boldtype.com who declare themselves as such: "From new titles to past gems, the books in each themed issue are hand-picked by a team of editors and writers who suggest only works that they themselves personally recommend." The paperback edition of this book doesn't actually get released until October this year, and so we ran with the hardcover. And in fact this is Boldtype.com's last week as hosting Sunday's review. We thank them for their varied and provocative reviews. Next Sunday we hope to welcome the LA Weekly for a guest spot. As for rhyme or reason to our choice of books reviewed, we like to think we offer quality reviews from a variety of sources. Mixing it up in terms of publisher date can be a nice way to promote a book that might have got lost on its original published date. I hope you enjoy the review service. I love working with it. I can't believe we've been doing it for over FIVE YEARS now!

I was a little surprised to see this review in my inbox, as I knew the paperback of the title had been released last October. Not that there isn't something to be said for the continued promotion of good books no matter what their publishing date. Is there a rhyme or reason to the older titles being distributed on the Review-a-Day? Do they have to be of a certain caliber, or are they given one last push approximately 5 months and 23 days after the last release? :)
