Marcelo in the Real World
by Francisco Stork
Staff Pick
Marcelo, a teen on the autism spectrum working at his father's law office for the summer (in Boston and I'm from Boston!), grapples with his sense of right and wrong. At first glance, Marcelo in the Real World looks like a straightforward legal mystery, but tangled up in this drama is a well-crafted novel about an ethical dilemma from an outsider's perspective. Part Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, part John Grisham, and part I Am the Messenger, this book is as beautiful inside as it is on the outside. It blew me away.

June: the month of summer vacations, trips to the beach, lazy sun-drenched days in parks, and Pride celebrations across the nation. Here at Powell's, we find ourselves especially proud of the number of kids' books with GLBT content or characters that we can offer. New titles are coming in monthly for kids of all ages, like Leslea Newman's board books Mommy, Mama and Me and Daddy, Papa and Me, Patricia Polacco's beautifully rendered picture book In Our Mothers' House, Dale Peck's YA novel Sprout, and more.
Super Guinea Pig to the Rescue
by Udo Weigelt
Staff Pick
Little guinea pig's favorite TV show is Super Guinea Pig. He loves it so much that when his friends (a dog, a canary, and a goldfish) make fun of the show, little guinea pig gets mad and forgets that characters on TV are not real friends. There are some interesting lessons about pride, and the difference between reality and imagination, but what's really important is that the guinea pig is fat and adorable, and his sword is a pin, and there is a very cool lamp that shows up in several pictures. You've just got to read it.

We often get questions along the lines of: "What are your favorite books for babies?" Naturally, as soon as we're asked the question, we can't think of any books for babies, much less ones that we like, despite the thousands of perfectly nice books to choose from. So, for our ahem, your convenience, we made a handy list, full of only the best, hippest, and newest titles.
Emiko Superstar (Minx Graphic Novels)
by Mariko Tamako
Staff Pick
Emiko Superstar, part of the stellar and unfortunately short-lived Minx line of comics, is the story of shy Emiko, whose summer is shaping up to be endless days of babysitting until she stumbles upon a gathering of people inspired by the Factory days of Andy Warhol. After Emiko discovers a diary full of secrets in the house of her seemingly perfect employer, she adopts a new, performance-art persona, leading to her inclusion in the "superstar" scene. Popularity isn't all it's cracked up to be, however, as Emiko discovers that she must deal with the delicate nuances of her new friendships as well as the moral dilemma of her stolen "art."
