Ace of Cakes: Inside the World of Charm City Cakes
by Duff Goldman
Staff Pick
What a great book for the Ace of Cakes fan! Like me! There isn't another show like Ace of Cakes, and there isn't another book quite like this: a charming scrapbook in the form of a coffee-table book. Ace of Cakes is filled with interesting background stories on the people who make up this now-iconic bakeshop, and it's loaded with pictures of Charm City Cakes. But many of the photos of cakes are tiny-tiny -- get a looking glass! If I were planning a wedding, I'd definitely browse through the centerfold section, which has every cake from the first seven years, to find a challenge for local bakers.

I Know How to Cook
by Ginette Mathiot
Staff Pick
If you are a French kid setting out for your first apartment, this is the cookbook your parents will send you off with. If you are an American and want to add a simple, flavorful, French twist to your home cooking, put this on your bookshelf. I Know How to Cook is Julia Child meets Betty Crocker all wrapped up in Joy of Cooking. Most Americans may skip the recipes for aspic, eel, sheep's feet, and brain, but, remember, this book was first published 1932, so there are going to be a few things we find anachronistic and yet interesting from a historical point of view. Be sure to check out the inside of the dust jacket -- it's the most beautiful inside of a dust jacket I've ever seen.
