The Lost Symbol
by Dan Brown
Staff Pick
While the rest of the world seems disappointed in Dan Brown's newest Robert Langdon book, I enjoyed it immensely. Yes, it follows a similar pattern as the previous books and, yes, Langdon again is called upon to save the world from some menacing threat that only he can uncover, but I didn't go into it expecting Brown to surpass The Da Vinci Code that just might not be possible. However, The Lost Symbol is a fun read, full of the usual codes and symbols that only Langdon can decipher, that takes us on a fascinating journey into the secrets of the Freemasons. Full of twists and turns, it's worth the read.

Love You to Death
by Shannon K. Butcher
Staff Pick
I've wanted to read Shannon Butcher for a while now and lucked into an advance copy of Love You to Death. I'm so glad I did. (Thank you, Jill and Sheila!) As the main character, Elise, searches for her "scatter-brained" sister who's gone missing, she connects with her sister's neighbor, an ex-cop named Trent. Butcher does an outstanding job of taking you into the mind of a very dark and disturbing killer, while creating characters you can't help but root for. Add some romance and a chilling plot that keeps the tension on high all the way to the end, and this is one you won't be able to put down.

Retribution: A Novel
by Jilliane Hoffman
Staff Pick
Jilliane Hoffman adds a new twist to the legal thriller: a prosecutor faced with a suspect who raped her while she was in law school. After years of struggle, C. J. Townsend has reinvented herself and moved on with her life after the brutal attack that left her clinging to life. Now, faced with her rapist and the chance to make him pay for his crime, she relives the terror of the assault while confronting legal and ethical dilemmas that threaten her mental stability and the state's case against a possible serial killer. Hoffman's characters are well drawn and complex. She adds a hint of romance, but the main feature of Retribution is the plot and C. J.'s attempt to gain retribution for her assault while bringing justice to the killer's victims.

206 Bones (Temperance Brennan Novels)
by Kathy Reichs
Staff Pick
Kathy Reich's latest Temperance Brennan novel is an electrifying read by far one of the best in this series. 206 Bones is fast paced, cleverly developed, and will keep you guessing until nearly the end. In the beginning of this 12th Bones novel (not to be confused with the television show), Brennan awakes to find herself tied up in a pitch-black, unknown locale, with no recollection of how she got there. The story unfolds as she frantically tries to free herself and piece together bits and pieces of her memory to reveal how she got there and who is responsible. 206 Bones is an example of a forensic thriller at its best: It gets your heart beating double time, moves your emotions, and fills that geek need for totally useless forensic details that so many of us thrive on.

Original Essays | September 17, 2009
By James Ellroy
An avalanche of recorded history assisted me in writing Blood's a Rover. The events of 1968 had been comprehensively catalogued and analyzed. A dearth of recorded history on Tricky Dick's Haiti/Dominican Republic policy assisted me as well -- I got that much more fictional wiggle room....
