The Ghost Soldiers: Poems
The Ghost Soldiers: Poems
by James Tate
Staff Pick
Tate, the master of the contemporary prose poem, cranks up the tension in his newest bunch of poems simply by letting his odd array of characters go back and forth with their skewed and hilarious conversations. These dialogue-heavy wonders are dense with hilarious accidents, bittersweet bickerings, melancholy lust, and disastrous miscommunications. We, the readers, are the lucky ones, eavesdropping from afar, in the warm weather of our collectively blown minds.

Poemland
Poemland
by Chelsey Minnis
Staff Pick
Minnis, a former Portlander (she used to read at the Café Lena open mic!), has been known to communicate through angsty verbiage and sullen silences (illustrated by her love of ellipses). Poemland, her third book, displays a fresh new confidence in her ability to express her thoughts and feelings without all the pauses and blunt stops. So many lines spark and shine like fireworks here, making Poemland a warm and generous entertainment.

Chronic: Poems
Chronic: Poems
by D A Powell
Staff Pick
I had the good fortune of hearing D. A. Powell read from his latest book, Chronic, and it was one of the better poetry readings I've ever been to. He was intelligent, witty, and sincere — and luckily his poems are, too. Powell shies away from nothing, and his poems are filled with the beauty, decay, loss, and want that come from looking at the world fully and writing bravely.

Selected Poems: 1970-2005
Selected Poems: 1970-2005
by Floyd Skloot
Staff Pick
Frankly, Floyd Skloot deserves to be better known. His lovely poems, many dealing with subjects made familiar to his readers through nonfiction books such as In the Shadow of Memory, are rigorous and technically brilliant. He writes with equal and telling passion of Whitman's involvement in a baseball game in the 1860s and the appearance of the last tsar of all the Russias in his backyard in the 1980s. Skloot is often depicted as a New Formalist. This fine collection of deeply moving work demonstrates that he is that and much more: a gifted poet writing at the height of his not inconsiderable powers.

Sestets: Poems
Sestets: Poems
by Charles Wright
Staff Pick
Here is another worthy addition to Charles Wright's extensive and impressive body of work. Written in a voice that is at times prophetic, at times desolate, the poems in Sestets carry much more weight than space upon the page.
