Dead and Gone: Sookie Stackhouse Novel #9 (Southern Vampire Series)
by Charlaine Harris
Staff Pick
I never tire of Sookie Stackhouse and her adventures. Dead and Gone, Charlaine Harris's ninth in this series, is great fun! Sookie faces angry fairies who are out to kidnap her in order to force her grandfather, a royal fairy, to bend to their will. But as usual, Sookie manages to surprise her enemies with her resourcefulness and grit. In the meantime, the werewolves have "come out" to the rest of the world and Sookie helps solve a gruesome murder. All in a day's work for our Sookie.

A Game of Thrones: A Song of Ice and Fire #1
by George R. R. Martin
From Powells.com
If you're a "read-the-book-first" type, you might want to get started now on George R. R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series. HBO has optioned the first book, A Game of Thrones, as a series, and 10 episodes are slated to begin filming in Ireland in fall 2009. (The current plan is to adapt one book per season.) What's more, independent game developer Cyanide Studios has acquired an exclusive option to develop the books as a series of video games, starting with (you guessed it) A Game of Thrones.... Raven's Strike
by Patricia Briggs
Staff Pick
I find myself loving every bit of this series and rereading passages that I've just finished because I like them so much. Seraph, Tier, and family are back in this sequel to Raven's Shadow, trying to stop the Shadowed before disaster strikes. They must find Colossae, a city, long forgotten. A city that was sacrificed by the Travelers, when they stopped the first Shadowed one. I also love the back story about Jes and his problems trying to cope with his order. The mythos that Briggs developed for this duology, with the Bird Orders and their gods, is simply brilliant!

Dragon Bones
by Patricia Briggs
Staff Pick
Ward of Hurog (heir apparent of Hurog's ruling family) has played the idiot for so long, in order to protect himself from his abusive father, that even after the old tyrant dies, he's still afraid to reveal his true self. themselves, and this... ( read more)

The Day of the Triffids
by John Wyndham
Wyndham chillingly envisions biowarfare and mass destruction in an account that seems even more prescient today than when it first appeared in 1951 at the height of cold war paranoia.
