What Girls Want
A review by Caitlin Flanagan
Children's books about divorce -- which are unanimously dedicated to bucking up those unfortunate little nippers whose families have gone belly-up -- ask a lot of their authors. Their very premise, however laudable, so defies the nature of modern children’s literature (which, since the Victorian age, has centered on a sentimental portrayal of the happy, intact family) that the enterprise seems doomed from the title. Since the 1950s, children have delighted in the Little Bear books (Mother Bear: “I never did forget your birthday, and I never will”) -- but who wants to find a copy of Cornelia Maude Spelman’s Mama and Daddy Bear’s Divorce wedged onto the shelf? Still, the volumes fill a need: helping children understand that life on the other side of the custody hearing can still be happy and hopeful, that a broken family is not a ruined one. But pick up a novel written for adolescents in which the main character is a child of divorce, and you’re in...

Europe Between the Oceans: themes and variations: 9000 BC-AD 1000 by Barry Cunliffe
Great archaeologists are often at war with themselves. They aim to explain seismic transformations -- social and cultural, economic, demographic, even genetic. But they do so by sifting (literally and figuratively) physical evidence that's scant and (literally and figuratively) fragmentary. These...
Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates
The thumbnail social history of the United States, as Godfrey Hodgson (the author of America in Our Time) once phrased it to me, is as follows: agrarian population moves as soon as it can to the cities, and then consummates the process by evacuating the cities for the suburbs. More Americans now...
Little Women (Penguin Classics) by Louisa May Alcott
[Ed. note: This review which covers two books, Little Women and An Old-Fashioned Girl , was originally published in the Atlantic Monthly, April 1903.]
There is, in short, no separate standard of taste by which
to determine the value of books written for children. To be of permanent use, they...
On the Origin of Species: A Facsimile of the First Edition (Harvard Paperbacks) by Charles Darwin
[Ed. note: This review was originally published in the Atlantic Monthly, July 1860].
Novelties are enticing to most people: to us they are simply annoying. We cling to a long-accepted theory, just as we cling to an old suit of clothes. A new theory, like a new pair of breeches, (The Atlantic ...
The Kennedy Tapes: Inside the White House During the Cuban Missile Crisis by Ernest R. May
[Ed. note: This review originally ran in the May 2000 issue of the Atlantic Monthly].
My twenty-three years as the historian at the John F. Kennedy Library, in Boston, were punctuated by intensive work on sound recordings. I conducted scores of taped oral-history interviews and verified the...
The World Is What It Is: The Authorized Biography of V.S. Naipaul by Patrick French
While recently rereading The Enigma of Arrival, considered by many to be Sir Vidia Naipaul's masterpiece, I was struck all over again by the breathtakingly observant operations of his eye and brain. In a novel that is so plainly autobiographical as to be scarcely classified as fiction, he describes ...
The House That George Built: With a Little Help from Irving, Cole, and a Crew of about Fifty by Wilfrid Sheed
Lyricists, not baseball players, were my heroes growing up, and as a young man I found a group of writers -- notably including my college mentor, William K. Zinsser, and Wilfrid Sheed -- who idolized both. They would fall easily into evenings around a piano, challenging each other to remember...
Have You Seen . . . ?: A Personal Introduction to 1,000 Films by David Thomson
Now we have the long-called-for companion to David Thomson's A Biographical Dictionary of Film, first published in 1975 and throughout its various editions the most seductive, infuriating, and influential reference book ever written on the movies. Thomson, an Englishman living in San Francisco, is...
Why Women Should Rule the World by Dee Dee Myers
[Ed. note: This review covers six books, Why Women Should Rule the World, All Too Human: A Political Education, The Architect: Karl Rove and the Dream of Absolute Power, The Sexual Paradox: Men, Women, and the Real Gender Gap, Counting for Nothing: What Men Value and What Women Are Worth, Looking...
Underworld by Don DeLillo
[Ed. note: This review was originally published in the Atlantic Monthly, October 1997].
"I Don't Want to Talk About It" read the engraved card that Don DeLillo handed me in Athens in 1979, after I'd crossed seven time zones to interview him. "It" was his youth, growing up with Italian immigrant...
