Morning News Tournament Excluded

Eight years ago, the folks at The Morning News started their annual Tournament of Books. That night, assembled around beer and cigarettes, they began discussing the logistics of the event, and someone said, "Well, what happens if one of us writes a book?" They all laughed, and someone else said, "If any of us ever writes a book, let's just say it will be automatically ineligible for the Rooster."

Well, last year, four TMNers published works of fiction, all to great acclaim. TMN co-founder Rosecrans Baldwin's You Lost Me There was called "a stunning debut...profound, affecting, and true" by National Public Radio, and "beautiful, brainy, and offbeat" by Entertainment Weekly. Jessica Francis Kane's The Report was said to be "nothing less than perfect" by Newsday, and was a finalist for the 2010 Flaherty-Dunnan First Novel Prize from the Center for Fiction. Anthony Doerr's Memory Wall was a NY Times Notable Book and was a finalist for The Story Prize. And Tournament Commissioner Kevin Guilfoile's The Thousand was called "original and gripping" by the New York Times, and a "must read" by Entertainment Weekly.

So although these books are constitutionally excluded from being considered for this year's Tournament of Books, we definitely wanted to include them in the fun here at Powell's.
