Poems
Poems
by Elizabeth Bishop
Staff Pick
Elizabeth Bishop's poetry is dearly loved amongst her fans but perhaps not as well-known as it should be; for one of America's towering talents of the 20th century, she is not read nearly as much as Eliot or Whitman, or even cummings. That may be in part because of her relatively slim output — this volume of all her poetic works clocks in at only 368 pages. But the care she took with her poetry is evident; every word is perfectly chosen, none wasted or missing. Her work is fiercely intelligent, poignant, surprising, plainspoken, and wrought from imagery both familiar and extraordinary. A must-read for anyone who is interested in poetry, language, or indeed literature at all, Bishop's Poems speaks deeply to what makes us human.

City Lights Pocket Poets #19: Lunch Poems
City Lights Pocket Poets #19: Lunch Poems
by Frank O'hara
Staff Pick
Most days, I carry a copy of Lunch Poems with me on my bus ride to work. It has been an icebreaker, a talisman, a security blanket, and much more. This 50th anniversary edition is a great opportunity to revisit one of the most celebrated poetry collections of the 20th century, or to discover it for the first time. It also includes 14 pages of illuminating correspondence between O'Hara and Lawrence Ferlinghetti, as well as a preface by John Ashbery. And it's finally in hardcover, so it'll last even longer!
