Six-Word Memoir Contest: Official Rules

1. Eligibility and How to Enter
NO PURCHASE IS NECESSARY TO ENTER THIS CONTEST and, by inference, to win the contest prize. Eligibility, however, is limited to legal adults (as determined by the entrant's state or province of residence; i.e., over 18 or 19, as applicable) that submit an original comment meeting the requirements listed herein. Employees of Powell's Books and its participating sponsors are not eligible to win the prize, nor are members of their immediate families. Only one entry will be accepted per email address; those entering more than once may be disqualified. Entries submitted after 12:00 midnight (PST) on the closing date (April 15, 2009) may be disqualified. Offer void where prohibited.

2. Comment Requirements
Eligible comment must be original; formerly unpublished; written or translated into English; and no more or less than six words. By submitting a comment for consideration, the entrant certifies that he or she is the sole author of said work: the work is free of plagiarism, and in no way infringes upon the rights of any third party. All quotations, no matter their length, must be credited to their original source. Comments found to be in violation of these requirements will automatically disqualify the entrant from this contest. Copyright will belong to Powells.com.

3. How We Select the Winner
Powell's staff will select ten (10) finalists based on factors including style, originality, creativity, and artistic quality. All decisions of the judges are final. Each finalist will be sent an email notification by Powell's. If a selected finalist is unreachable within five (5) days of notification, an alternate finalist will be chosen. A panel designated by the editors of HarperCollins will choose the winning comment from the ten (10) finalists. If a selected winner is unreachable, ineligible, or fails to claim the prize within five (5) days, the winner will forfeit his or her prize and an alternate winner will be selected. Winner must have or create a Powells.com account for the purpose of prize distribution.

4. About The Prize
One (1) winner will be awarded the grand prize: his or her comment published in a forthcoming book from HarperCollins, and a copy of said book upon its release. The ultimate classification of the prize remains at the discretion of Powells.com. No part of the contest prize is transferable. All taxes associated with the receipt or use of the contest prizes are the sole responsibility of the winner.

5. Affidavit of Eligibility and Publicity Release
All entrants, including the grand prize contest winner, will be required to execute a legal affidavit of eligibility and acceptance of these Official Rules, release of liability, confirmation of rights, and, except where prohibited by law, consent to use of his or her name, city, state or province, all or a portion of the winning comment, and/or prize information, without limitation for promotional and publication purposes and without further payment.

6. Release
By submitting an entry, entrants release our sponsors and their affiliated companies from any and all liability for any claims, costs, injuries, losses, or damages of any kind arising out of or in connection with the prize (including, without limitation, claims, costs, injuries, and losses related to personal injuries, death, damage to or destruction of property, or rights of publicity or privacy). EMAIL ADDRESSES SUBMITTED TO POWELLS.COM WILL NOT BE SHARED, SOLD, OR DISCLOSED TO THIRD PARTIES, EXCEPT AS REQUIRED BY LAW.

7. Other
Entrants agree to be bound by these Official Rules, which are final and binding in all respects. These Official Rules constitute the entire agreement of the parties with respect to the subject matter addressed here and may not be altered except by a written document signed both by qualified representatives of Powells.com and the entrant. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Powells.com reserves the right to change these Official Rules at any time. Any entrant who violates these Official Rules will be subject to disqualification.
