DOUG BROWN'S FACTOID
While there are many small recent volcanic cones in the immediate Portland area, the most prominent volcano on the Portland skyline is Mt. Hood. The oldest rocks at the base of the mountain are Columbia River Basalts dating back 12 to 17 million years before present. However, the main bulk of the stratovolcano is andesitic rock that erupted less than 700,000 years ago. In the last 15,000 years, there have been four main eruptive periods; however, they have only subtly changed the shape of the mountain. The most recent was from 1760 to 1810; Crater Rock is a lava dome formed during this period. Lewis and Clark described the Sandy River as choked with debris from these eruptions.
