Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Train in the Distance
by
Capps, S. W.

S.W. Capps captures a mood of contemporary darkness and despair in this well-hewed story about a young man who follows the calling of being a journalist and T.V. reporter in Oklahoma for a year in his life in 1987. The author tells this tale from his life-experience as a TV reporter. In the novel, Stacy Zwardowski thinks being a journalist will get him closer to his true goal of being a writer, but instead it takes him down a dark path of lies and conspiracies that reveal the truth about how media reporters skew the news toward sensationalism instead of reporting the facts of a story. Since reading TRAIN IN THE DISTANCE I have listened and watched "the news" in a way that makes me question almost everything that is said. The train in the distance becomes a metaphor for smoke and sound with no substance and calls to mind the trickery of the great wizard of Oz. There are heroes in this story. Stacy's cameraman and friend, Julius, captured my heart, maybe because he was an innocent and reluctant hero, wanting to sit it out on the sidelines but finding himself in the thick of the fight. Capps writes with an ease and clarity that wafts you along and builds in character and incidence to the apex of a crescendoing wave. This story is a really good read and I recommend it for, not only individuals, but book clubs. The author invokes a sense of discontent we feel about our contemporary world and leaves us wanting to discuss much.

Guest House
by
Barbara K. Richardson
Nel Rand
, February 19, 2010
I have just finished GUEST HOUSE and I loved it. Barbara Richardson emerges as one of our best new writers. Her style reminds me of Michael Chabon, with the poetic prose of Janet Fitch, the humor of Fannie Flagg, and the sparse elegance of Annie Proulx. I loved the wham bam pace, the toughness of the characters, and the way they endeared themselves to me despite their anger and sometimes downright meanness. This books is a great read and would be good for a book club discussion.
