Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. The Big O: My Life, My Times, My Game
by

The Big O is probably the greatest basketball player of all time. He also is perhaps the best basketball player to come out of the state of Indiana, and many great players have come from the Hoosier state. I still remember his team winning two straight Indiana state high school championships and the city of Indianapolis police and fire departments having to protect them when they travelled downtown to celebrate because the white population were afraid of riots. Read this book, It is the story of a great man, not only in basketball, but one who succeeded in the gamo of life. Bill Powell

The War Comes to Plum Street
by

I grew up on Plum Street right after WW II and it depicts the small town atmosphere of any small town in the Midwest. I know Mrs. Capshaw, mentioned in the book. Her son was killed during WW II and she still had his picture in her window in 1956, when I met her. She lived across the street from me on Plum Street. I mowed her yard and she never talked about her son who lost his life right after graduating from high school. Her daughter, Judy Van Matre (married name) was my sister's third grade teacher at Hernly Elementary School. A fascinating book for people who grew up in New Castle, or anyone interested on how the war affected small town Mid America.
