Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Dreaming from the Journal Page Transforming the Sketchbook to Art

I have always wanted to learn how to take what is in my head or what I see and create a piece of cloth or a painting with it. I have admired those who keep visual journals or sketchbooks, but did not think it was for me. Melanie Testa's book enabled me to see the value of keeping a journal and how to take those images dancing around in my head and do something with them. Melanie gently takes you on a road of exploration of different media, explains the various tools, and how to use them. There are tips and throw down challenges. I learned so much from this book and my artwork has moved forward by leaps and bounds. A truly wise investment and an excellent gift.

Melanie Testa's latest book has taken my artwork to new levels. Melanie urges you to challenge yourself and explains so well how to do so. I highly recommend this book. As a textile artist, I always wanted to explore drawing and painting. This book taught me more than any book on the subject that I have purchased. The illustrations and photography are fabulous.
