Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Ten Thousand Saints

i picked this up by accident, and half expected to leave it half read. but something sunk in almost immediately, and i felt totally invested in the fate of the characters and the cities they lived in, loved, and half longed to leave. they got into my head and heart, and i felt equally compelled by all of them and how real they felt to me as a reader. the music scene and clash of cultures felt a tiny bit over written, but it didn't matter. i loved this book and can't wait for more by eleanor henderson.

13 Words
by
Lemony Snicket, Maira Kalman

If I got married for the Kitchen Aid, then I had a kid so we could share Lemony Snicket and Maira Kalman's 13 Words. 13 Words is funny, smart and kind of close to perfect. We love it all -- the unlucky number, the amazing illustration of a goat in a spiffy jacket, and of course the best ever despondent blue bird. All of it, in the words of my almost three year old, is "SO Silly!" And there is nothing sillier nor sweeter than hearing him say some of those 13 words, especially "despondent" and "haberdashery". I could listen to him saying haberdashery all day. AND he now wants a birthday cake with "panache" and for that i am FOREVER in their debt. If not a bit despondent. Now my 2 year old and I share not only 13 words, but two favorite authors and one of the best books around.

please, baby, Please is funny and sweet and perfect. and by far the best book of the decade. at least the best board book, and that matters, too! if my 15 month old son could write, or talk, for that matter, he would tell you himself.
