Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat: Mastering the Elements of Good Cooking
by
Samin Nosrat and Wendy MacNaughton
Lissa
, March 20, 2018
A book on How to cook, not just a collection of recipes. Food science in the best sense of the word - without realizing that is what it is. I'm a fairly good intuitive cook and learned quite a few helpful tips in how to approach cooking and how to get the best flavor possible with just a couple of tweaks. Oh, and the illustrations are wonderful - informative and humorous. Spoiler Alert! This is going to be my Christmas present of the year for all my cooking and non-cooking friends and family!

Thank You for Your Service
by
David Finkel
Lissa
, May 26, 2014
If you read only one book this year, choose "Thank You for Your Service" by David Finkel. It is the most profoundly moving and shocking non-fiction book I have read. Beautifully written, Mr. Finkel's understated, matter-of-fact yet empathetic prose provides the perfect counterpoint to the complex, challenging lives of wounded service personnel, their families, and the organizations that try to support them after they returned from the recent war. The book itself is not lengthy, but took me quite a while to read as I had to take frequent breaks - often for days - to process before resuming. Now, when I thank someone for their service, it will be with the understanding that what they have given is not only a few months or even a few years of active duty, but every day for the rest of their lives and their families' lives.

Innocent
by
Scott Turow
Lissa
, March 13, 2011
Turow presents the story from the different perspective of most of the characters, drawing out the suspense. Like watching a suspense movie, I wanted to call out to the characters to warn them. Intriguing and difficult to put down, even tho the characters are every day people with their own strengths and vulnerabilities. A great read. Will make a good movie.

Athena Project
by
Brad Thor

This is one of the worst books I've read in the past couple of years. The idea of an all woman special ops group has merit, but how it is rendered is awful. Has this man never spent any time with competent, capable women?! Come on, women do not "adjust themselves". This is a very male-based novel, with male ideas and language - it just has women in the male roles. I thought the idea of professional women as mini-men was defunct - too bad I was wrong!

The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet
by
David Mitchell
Lissa
, March 13, 2011
David Mitchell does it again - writes a book about seemingly obscure locations and lives and comes up with a winner. I'm not sure how he does it, but this book that I would think I would have no interest in reading, captured and kept my attention with his finely crafted writing. After reading 2 of his books (also Cloud Atlas), I will be eagerly awaiting the next.

Border Songs
by
Jim Lynch
Lissa
, March 15, 2010
An unusual setting - the pacific northwest US/Canadian border. Typical small town/rural community conections. Atypical storyline, but probably not atypical problem. Unusual characters who remind us of our personal challenges, which may also turn out to be our greatest gifts. What a wonderful read! I will be watching for future books by Jim Lynch!

The Girl Who Played with Fire: Millennium 2
by
Stieg Larsson
Lissa

Even better than the first book (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) - but read the first book first - as there will only ever be 3. These stories are cross-genre, like any good book should be and are written with insight that is both familiar and yet, shocking at times. It is easy to get swept into this story and this world, without realizing it or even thinking that it is something to get swept into! Looking forward to the 3rd book and dreading its end, as that is all there is....

South Of Broad
by
Pat Conroy
Lissa
, January 06, 2010
I'm "reading" this book by listening to it on CD in my car - I find myself making excuses to drive more just to listen to it and I dislike driving and traffic! We already knew that Pat Conroy is a marvelous story teller - this book reminds me of a sophisticated and genteel Garrison Keillor (I grew up in MN). His characters are both true-to-life - within reach of belief, yet are inspirational. I absolutely love this book.

South Of Broad
by
Pat Conroy
Lissa
, January 01, 2010
The finest of southern prose, South of Broad invites its readers into Southern life with descriptions of the lanscape, society and indivuduals that intertwine to create a place, at time, a society. Pat Conroy leads us to love all the characters and to see ourselves in their strengths and foibles. Haven't enjoyed a book so much in a long time. (This is also a great book to listen to or read aloud.)

Training the Hard to Train Dog Effective Training Techniques for Working with Shy Controlling & Stubborn Dogs
by
Peggy O Swager
Lissa
, September 08, 2009
This book is just excellent! The format is easy to read and easy to use. The training instructions are explicit, yet presented simply. Insights into the type of dog one is working with and how training modifications can make a huge difference in training make sense and match some of my personal experience. If you are working with a breed that has a reputation for being hard to train or a personality that is hard to train - this is the book for you!

The Girl Who Played with Fire: Millennium 2
by
Stieg Larsson
Lissa
, September 08, 2009
Top of my list for 2009! An engagingly told story with intriguing characters who strike cords of recognition within most of us, while intangilbe differences draw us to further into the story. This book, like the preceding one, The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo, cross many genres - something for almost everyone. A rare sequel that is even better than the first. Savor every word, as there are and will be only 3 books!
