Blood Runs Like A River Through My Dream
by
Nasdijj

Written as a memoir by a Navajo, later found out to be false, this book still should be read. Although not a "memoir" - you may view it as fiction, this book is still beautifully written and should be read. Not many contemporary books out there are about the Navajos or reservation life. Open your eyes and mind, forget the controversy surrounding the author and read a lovely piece of work.

Ok, so if you read Flowers in the Attic, read this!! If not go out and read it then proceed with Garden of Shadows. But DO NOT read this before Flowers in the attic!!! This will change your prospective and depending which you read first, change your view on the story of this family with many secrets. The Dollanger Series starts with Flowers and ends with Garden.

Hoot
by
Carl Hiaasen
desi_young
, November 12, 2008
With only two young adult/kids books under his belt, Hiaasen brings his wacky offbeat characters with a pro environment flair and anti new construction to a younger generation. I went to see him at a speaking engagement once for the other kids book Flush, and he was amazed at how many kids were there as he stated his other writings should be held off for reading til his crowd was a little bit older. As with any Hiaasen book, the bad guys will always get what they deserve and the good guys win and something strange will happen that will make you shake your head.

Five People You Meet In Heaven
by
Mitch Albom
desi_young
, November 04, 2008
A story to make you think of who your five people in heaven are and how you've impacted others in your everyday life without knowing it. If the final revelation by Eddies fifth person doesn't bring a tear to your eye, you must be a heartless cold person. The movie was good and faithful to the book, but reading the book is way better as it plays out in your head and imagination.

Classic. Read the book or watch the movie or listen on audiobook. I reccomend any version of this timeless story. If reading for the first time get the paperback, if like the countless others who love this book, go out and buy this copy with the pretty hardcover.

Bradbury's first book. There is a 2001 edition that's cheaper in price but any die hard Bradbury fan would cherish these stories in this 1st edition.

Many remember the name of Robinson as the breaker of the baseball color barrier. But decades before an Indian was there. He would be the inspiration for the name of Clevand's team. Come and read more about him, a very interesting read.

Anyone But You
by
Jennifer Crusie
desi_young
, January 11, 2008
Older Nina finally dumps the husband and his ways that aren't hers and sets off to do what she wants instead of what he wanted. First on the list- get a perky pup. But fate hands her death row Fred, who is on his last day at the pound when she visits. Bringing home a older, smelly oreo lovin' Basset has in store many surprises, including a younger neighbor Nina doesn't think will work out in the love department. Leave it to Fred , who knows best. In the end this might be a cheesy romance read, but any basset lover will fall in love with it.

Code Talker: A Novel about the Navajo Marines of World War Two
by
Joseph Bruchac
desi_young
, May 14, 2007
Although a Young Adult read, Code Talker is a great read for any age and intro to the Navajo Marines of WWII. Bruchac has done his homework for this fictional book. We follow a young Navajo as he goes off to boarding school, then high school, and finally the Marines as the recruiting has come to the rez for native speakers of the the Navajo language (which the young Indians have been scolded for talking in). Even though the main character is a work of fiction, many places, battles and some experiences are based on fact. We get a look into these brave men who were heroic yet could not speak of what they did to anyone til many years after the war and did not get the recognition they derserved.

The story of a lion brought to the city from the wild to become civilized and famous, told to us as only Uncle Shelby can. By the end you will want to ride elevators endlessly up and down, buy a marshmellow suit, and be on the lookout for the next spotting of Lafcadio, the lion who shot back.

Run with the Horsemen
by
Sams, Ferrol
desi_young
, August 26, 2006
First in a triology that follows a boy from childhood to WWII. In Run with the Horsemen, our main character is growing up on the family farm in Georgia during the depression with his quirky family, immediate and not so immediate, and follows up to his high school graduation. With life here at this time in history, he seems to get into trouble and learns life's lessons that remind the reader of other coming of age stories, such asTo Kill A Mockingbird or The Catcher in The Rye. One read not to be missed, it will make you laugh more often the cry, it makes you remember back to yestertear.
