Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

She's America's sweetheart's crazy (but just as sweet) and brilliantly inventive third cousin. I've already been invited to my first Amy Sedaris book party featuring recipes and tips where I will be trying out Amy Sedaris' Li'l Smokey Cheeseball. Thanks, Amy!

Fugitives & Refugees A Walk in Portland Oregon

Though the Portland lingo is not quite right (as far as I and all my Portland friends know it), the chapter on taking LSD at the OMSI laser light show just about made me pee my pants with laughter. Oh! So funny!

Babel

Jim Houser paints poems. No matter what the situation, the man makes art - through thick and thin, tragedy and happiness. His art is as cathartic for the viewer as it is for the artist. His collection seen here, the first for the Philly artist, is just lovely.

Rabid (Special Edition)
by

In the world of horror [a]Cronenberg[/a] is definitely one of the underestimated craftsmen. Marilyn Chambers (porno queen Marilyn Chambers that is, best remembered for [t]Behind the Green Door[/t] and [t]The Resurrection of Eve[/t]) stars as Rose. When Rose is injured in a motorcycle accident and has experimental surgery performed in order to save her life, things go awry. She develops a taste for blood. Her victims grow in number as well as madness, turning the city into chaos. One of my Cronenberg favorites. It'll make you jump more than a few times.

In the Mood for Love: Criterion Collection
by
Tony Leung Chiu-Wai
Book Monkey

I stopped smoking a few months ago and damn, if this is not the movie to push me off the wagon! Wong Kar Wai's cinematography is so amazingly alluring and sexy that even simply watching the smoke curl off of Tony Leung's cigarette had me hooked. Yo Yo Ma's haunting cello and Maggie Cheung's sexy cheongsams complete the dark story that will fold you in and leave you anxioiusly awaiting the sequel, 2046.

Le Samourai
by
Jean-Pierre Melville
Book Monkey
, May 09, 2006
A beautiful and astonishing film, 'Le Samourai' is one of the best films ever made, arguably the most perfect. The start of the film is completely dialog-free for almost ten minutes. And the silence - like the robbery scene in Bob Le Flambeau (the most successful) - is crucial to setting the scene. It's haunting and lonely and you feel what it is like to be a perfectionist French hitman in the 60's named Jef. Alain Delon is perfectly cast.
