Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Paul Simon: A Life
by
Marc Eliot
Tasha
, November 16, 2010
It's pretty clear by the first chapter than Marc Eliot likes neither Paul Simon or his music. It's full of snarky comments unfavorably comparing Simon's songs to those of other folk musicians (Dylan, Ochs, etc.) and talking about Paul's adolescent attitudes (he was in his teens and early 20s -- what would you expect!). He doesn't seem to have any genuine curiosity about the man or the music, just a desire to give us his own opinions.

Novelists Notebook
by

A great resource for budding or experienced novelists. Imaginative invitations to explore many aspects of your characters, setting, and story, perfect for busting through writing blocks or just plain procrastination, and deepening your understanding of what you are creating.

Available Light
by
Marge Piercy

Marge Piercy bringing her intense curiosity and powerful images to middle age. Fresh and wise, tender and clear, this is my favorite of her books - and perhaps my favorite poetry read this year.

Meditation For Beginners

Jack Kornfield

Jack Kornfield's kind and direct instruction is inviting, and the images he uses have a gentle but powerful ability to bring me into my own quiet place. I will use this again and again and again.

Bujold is amazing, and this book deepens the tale she started in Shards of Honor in an utterly satisfying read.
