When Nietzsche Wept
by
Irvin D Yalom
Susan Jacobson
, December 10, 2012
I would never have thought that I would love this book--but I do! :) The plot is rather convoluted, but that does not at all detract from the book. A fascinating blend of fact and fiction--and if you have ever read Nietzsche, you should not pass this book up.

Love In The Time Of Cholera
by
Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Susan Jacobson
, June 04, 2012
This is a book that I will read again. It will break your heart and then fill it with joy. Marquez is a master with words. several times as I was reading, I had to stop--just to repeat a phrase out loud that was so beautiful I had to hear it with my ears. I will now read anything else he has ever written. This book is one that nobody should miss reading.

Hell No: Your Right to Dissent in Twenty-First Century America
by
Michael Ratner and Margaret Ratner Kunstler
Susan Jacobson
, February 16, 2012
If you are an activist, you need to read this book. If you are thinking of becoming an activist, you need to read this book. If you are not an activist? Read this book, and you will become one! The Center for Constitutional Rights, an organization whose sole purpose is to protect our rights, helped produce this book. They and the authors have produced a classic--in the style of Rules for Radicals--that is sure to be used by many.

14000 Things To Be Happy About
by
Barbara Kipfer
Susan Jacobson
, September 07, 2011
Who can't use a little reminder of how many little things make life wonderful? I sure can, and this book is a great little reminder. Of course, there are many more things to be happy about--but this book provides a great starting point. Once you start to look at the little things that bring joy, your mind begins to find them everywhere. This book is great for anyone bogged down by life's troubles.

The Dark Bride
by
Laura Restrepo
Susan Jacobson
, September 07, 2011
I loved this book. The language was beautifully crafted, and the characters grabbed me immediately. I was sorry to reach the end of the story. Perfect to read on sweltering summer days--or any time of year. Sayonara was a wonderful character--I loved her and mistrusted her also, but Restrepo made Sayonara unforgettable, and even though she was hard around the edges, I could not help feeling compassion for the child within.

My Stroke of Insight A Brain Scientists Personal Journey
by
Jill Bolte Taylor
Susan Jacobson
, September 07, 2011
I first saw a video of Jill Bole Taylor speaking on a TED Talk. She was amazing, and I knew then that I would read her book. This book is not just for victims of brain trauma and those who love them. This book is relevant for any human with a brain. :) Truly, nirvana is only a thought away--at any time we can choose to go there. Also fascinating to hear a brain scientist describe a stroke from the inside--this is a rare opportunity to share her insight. Loved this book.

Woman Among Warlords The Extraordinary Story of an Afghan Who Dared to Raise Her Voice
by
Malalai Joya
Susan Jacobson
, September 03, 2011
This young woman refuses to let anyone silence her voice. Even after assassination attempts, she continues to speak out. She gives a true picture of the people of Afghanistan--how they fight both religious fundamentalists, the Taliban, and US and NATO occupation in their country. This is a moving account, a fresh perspective, and one you will never see on the mainstream media. Malalai Joya is one of the bravest people living in the world today. This book is a must read!

Delirio Delirium
by
Laura Restrepo
Susan Jacobson
, January 01, 2011
A tale of violence and love beautifully woven with stories of drug trafficking and money laundering. The novel is like a poem--the words fit together that perfectly. It will haunt you long after you finish the last page. I will certainly seek out and read everything else this author has penned.

Broke USA From Pawnshops to Poverty Inc How the Working Poor Became Big Business
by
Gary Rivlin
Susan Jacobson
, July 09, 2010
This is a disturbing book. It is crazy how the working poor are taken advantage of in the name of profit. These types of businesses did not always exist--and hopefully some day they will again go away.

Man's Search for Meaning
by
Viktor E. Frankl
Susan Jacobson
, June 26, 2010
This is an amazing, potentially life changing, book. I think it should be required reading in schools today, given the nature of our current society, where so many people suffer from feelings of emptiness and are unable to formulate what their purpose in life is. This is the perfect antidote to materialism. I am advising everyone I care about to read this wonderful little book.

Breaking the Sound Barrier
by
Goodman, Amy
Susan Jacobson
, January 01, 2010
i could not put this book down. even though much of what i read made me furious. we are fed so much propaganda by the mainstream media, and it is important for americans to hear news from other sources, given the problems we are facing, nationally and globally. this book makes it clear why we must all support local, independent media sources.

i had heard about this book for a long time, and never picked it up. i wasn't sure if the topic or setting would hold my interest (even tho' it was a prize winning book) once i did pick it up? it hooked me :) i dare anyone to get 50 pages into this book without becoming smitten, or being able to put it down for short periods even! i plan now to do more research on the subject. it's an interesting one, and more common than people might think. read this book! you won't regret it. :)

i would recommend this book :) it is relevant to everyone :) we all shy away from the subject of death, but is it really such a terrible thing to talk about? who really knows? nobody has ever come back to tell me what they thought of being dead :) it doesn't hurt to keep an open mind and a smile on your face when you consider this subject :) this is exactly what these authors have done.
