Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Wicked Lovely 01
by
Melissa Marr

Wicked Lovely is a great summer read. My Goth daughter loved it and so did I. It has a fine message and some well-crafted and edgy characters, along with a nice blend of folklore that takes you beyond Disney and Froud into the world of Faeries and cold iron. I'm looking forward to the next one by Ms Marr!

Leadership & the New Science Discovering Order in a Chaotic World
by
Margaret J Wheatley

This book will blow your hair back, especially if you have ever been part of a "change initiative" in your work life. Meg Wheatley's observations and her clear style make you want to slap your forehead and say "Why didn't I think of that?" At the same time she challenges her readers to take the action and responsibility needed to move forward with a new world view that throws out the old mechanistic way of thinking and declares that humans and their organizations are "whole systems" and operate just the same as ecological and cosmic systems. A great read.

His Dark Materials Boxed Set New Art
by
Philip Pullman

This set of three books will get any child - young or old - thinking about the tough questions in life...but in a most enjoyable way! These are books for the ages, accessible as pure fantasy, but also profound in the way they address matters that saturate our conciousness and occupy our curiosity about what lies beyond the here and now. His Dark Materials is an adventure for the heart, for it's a love story, and a voyage for the soul, for it questions the fabric of existence. Read it! Read it! Read it!
