The Light Between Oceans

Simply stunning. The characters are wonderfully drawn and each one tugs at your heartstrings. The problem evolves innocently enough and quite reasonably. Before you know it, you are caught up and invested in it. Despite the pain all around, you really feel torn and truly cannot find the right answer to this moral dilemma. A great choice for book groups with lots to discuss and debate. The time setting, just after World War I, helps explain the reasoning behind some of the actions. The place setting, the lighthouse on a remote Australian island, also plays a key role. By the last pages of the story, I couldn't stop the tears from flowing. This was recommended by a friend and I have continued to "pay forward" that advice to others.

Gone Girl

I'm not a huge fan of mysteries/thrillers, but this was recommended by my best friend and, as is usually the case, she was right. Although I figured out the "who dunnit" very early on, the how and why -- and the getting to them -- were a whirlwind. Very well-written, totally fascinating, thoroughly entertaining.

I loved everything about this book. The writing was incredible, the story was compelling, the characters were amazing. I felt like I knew them -- or wanted to.

I loved everything about this book -- the writing (fabulous!), the characters (realistic), the story (riveting). Although I've been trying to thin out my bookcases to make room for new books, this is one that I've decided to keep. I'll definitely be reading it again.

Poisonwood Bible
by
Barbara Kingsolver

I've always enjoyed Barbara Kingsolver's work, but when this was suggested at my women's book group, I balked at reading it. However, it zoomed to the top of my list of all-time favorites and has stayed there. The writing is wonderful, the story is fascinating and the book has everything: love, mystery, comedy, tragedy, science, nature, history, politics and much more. It is by turns funny, sad, fascinating and educational. I have lots of notes, comments and marks in the margins -- something I haven't done since college -- and many, many pages have been turned down to mark something extraordinary. I have passed this book on to everyone I know and a few people I don't. Each time a friend starts reading it or I buy a copy to give to an acquaintance, I am so excited I read it again myself. Kingsolver deserved every price she received for this and all the ones she did not.
