Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Wet Engine Exploring the Mad Wild Miracle of the Heart
by
Brian Doyle
Laura
, October 11, 2006
I don't know how Brian Doyle managed to put so much heart into such a tiny book and fit in so many long, long, long sentences and make it sound so natural as if he were on the other end of a phone conversation, while making me want to meet all the many, many people he introduced in the book, which maybe I did meet them, actually, so I'm glad he did. Yes, I'm glad.

Shower of Heavenly Roses: Stories of Intercession of St. Therese of Lisieux
by
Elizabeth Ficocelli
Laura
, October 03, 2006
I am not Catholic, but I was inspired by this book about St. Therese and the ways she has given signs to people that their prayers were heard. It is a compilation of many quick, touching stories, including an account from Olympic figure skater, Tara Lapinsky. Most of those who told of their experiences after praying through St. Therese received roses or rose petals. I think readers will be influenced by these life-changing experiences.
