Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Snow Flower & The Secret Fan

This is my 2nd attempt at getting some recognition for this wonderful book. I'm very hard to please when it comes to books. If it hasn't caught my attention by the 2nd chapter, I give up. This was so beautifully written. Every sentence so carefully crafted that I wished it would go on forever. It's the story of Lily who looks back at her life as an old lady. The betrayal of her best friend and her regrets over doing this. It takes place in 19th century China when women's feet were bound and marriages were arranged. "Nu shu" was the secret language women used to communicate with other women via the "Secret Fan".

Echo Maker

It took winning the National Book Award this year for me to give this author a try. The Echo Maker is so different from anything else I've ever read. This is not the kind of book one simply "skims". You want to savor every word. Every sentence. That's the difference between being a writer and just being a novelist. On the surface the book is a mystery which was both absorbing and entertaining, but there is an underlying theme of miscomunication woven throughout. The mamilian brain sure is an interesting place to probe I can't wait to read all his other books.
