Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Spoiled Rotten America Outrages Of Conte
by
Larry Miller
somanybooks

I'm a big fan of Millers and have seen his stand-up many times. His writing here is great at times, but I was really expecting something else, I guess. Each of these essays is astute and full of sharp wit and commentary on life, but the end result seems muted somehow, and lacked the punch of his live performances. Don't get me wrong, this still beats so many of the books written by comedians, it just doesn't do it as easily as it should.

The Prodigal Troll
by
Charles Coleman Finlay

I've read some of Finlay's work in various Sci-Fi/Fantasy magazines and enjoyed it, so I sought out his book. His writing is just wonderful here. The main character, Maggot, is actually featured in a couple of Finlay's short pieces. It's a great story from an excellent storyteller. Maggot's tale develops nicely and I really hope (as the ending suggestd) that we get to see how it continues in a sequel.

Lessons Of Terror
by
Caleb Carr
somanybooks
, January 17, 2007
I've loved Carr's fiction - The Angel of Darkness, etc. - and was intrigued to try out this non-fiction look at terrorism and its effect on its intended victims. Carr's style can get a little dry in places, but otherwise its a solid read. He sites specific instances throughout history, examines the motivations of both sides and describes how terrorist acts impacted, or failed to impact their intended victims. Its facinating in our current era to see how past cultures endured and prevailed.

Dragon America
by
Mike Resnick
somanybooks
, January 17, 2007
Resnick is an old hand at sci-fi and fantasy and doesn't dissappoint in this exciting, if short, novel. A fledgling America seeking assistance from the indigenous dragons? Great idea! Well executed by Resnick and certainly worth a read if you're a fantasy fan.
