Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)

It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Pilgrim at Tinker Creek

This book cannot be confined to a single category. It is a first person memoir that ranges across philosophy, nature study, and aesthetics; and it has a touch of Zen. It is about observing and recording in the moment. Some friends have said that it is boring, and they did not finish it. I urged them to give it another try and-- go slowly, be patient, and look carefully -- just like the author.

Essential Chess Sacrifices
by

An in depth look at 15 sacrifice themes in positions that occur over and over. e.g. Nxb5 against the Sicilian. Each theme gets its own chapter and half a dozen or more actual games between masters showing its use. Includes a decent number of board diagrams at critical points and explanations of alternate lines. Originally, I checked this book out of the library. but after reading the first chapter have decided to buy it- from Powells of course, but since I am lucky enough to live in Portland I will be visiting the store instead of buying on line.
