Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Sense of an Ending

The Sense of an Ending says so much in one slim volume - how one man misunderstands an entire life. Masterful.

Her Fearful Symmetry
by
Audrey Niffenegger
Odessa
, October 25, 2009
Returning from my sister-in-law’s hospital room outside of Chicago, I found that Seattle had crossed over into autumn. I slid my copy of Audrey Niffenegger’s new novel Her Fearful Symmetry from its niche on the shelf and began to read a perfect novel for the season. A hint of what is to come sighs itself awake on the first page in the form of a quote from John Lennon’s eldritch song She Said She Said. It and its many companion hints shimmer through the story - did you see or imagine them? All are resolved by the end of the book; each question posed has been answered. A few new and unexpected ones proposed. Ms. Niffenegger, will we learn what has become of Robert Fanshaw in a later volume? Audrey Niffenegger’s new novel Her Fearful Symmetry is a surprising follow-up to the already-legendary The Time Traveler's Wife. That was a book I’ve enjoyed more than once and I looked forward to the release of Symmetry. Each twist in the Gothic path of the new novel is telegraphed long in advance starting with the name of the building housing the London flat inherited by the mirror twin protagonists. Is the name Vautravers a conflation of the French for vulture and crossing through, or is it a coincidence? You may not even wonder. It’s icing on this Victorian tea cake to place it adjoining Highgate Cemetery. When I consider the exquisite The Three Incestuous Sisters, which I have seen only in it’s 2005 print reproduction, I see the germ of the new volume. And I know what it is to be sad. Spending fourteen years making a rich and beautiful art object is too heavy a burden to lay upon a popilar novelist. But please, Ms Niffenegger, do not turn into Ann Rice. That would be dark magic indeed.
