Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Visiting Hours: A Memoir of Friendship and Murder
by
Butcher, Amy
Amber
, July 07, 2015
Affected by her proximity to trauma, Butcher's memoir addresses not only her friendship with the murderer but also how the murder shaped her in the following years. Some reader reviews I've seen are critical of her for what they see as a self-centered view. I wonder if they read beyond the first few chapters. I won't go into my own experiences, but her section on PTSD was exactly what I needed to read. Admittedly, this book isn't for everyone; however, even if you don't love it you should be able to appreciate the craftsmanship that went into writing it.

Lions Of Lucerne
by
Brad Thor

Despite a few eye rolling moments, Brad Thor has really drawn me into Scot Harvath's world. Lions is a quick read and full of all kinds of interesting ancillary facts. Thor does an especially great job with location descriptions, which shouldn't be too much of a surprise.

Tale of Despereaux Being the Story of a Mouse a Princess Some Soup & a Spool of Thread
by
Kate Dicamillo
Amber
, March 19, 2008
I've read other books by Dicamillo and feel that this may be her best. This is a book that begs (and deserves) to be read out loud. To the commentor who feels abuse was made light of, I would counter that nothing was made light of. This is a very serious book about very serious subjects--love, hope, and the connectedness of all creatures and events.
