Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Pictures of Perfection: A Superintendent Dalziel & Sergeant Pascoe Mystery: Superintendent Dalziel & Sergeant Pascoe 15

My favorite mystery novel. Period. Seriously, just take my word for it. DO NOT read any reviews. DO NOT read the book jacket. DO NOT so much as glance at a blurb. It wouldn't be any fun if you knew anything (let alone everything) about what happens, right? Right. So Step 1: Start reading the novel. Now, you might find yourself thinking, Oh, this isn't my kind of mystery at all. Which brings us to Step 2: KEEP READING. (Step 3 is completely optional: You can thank me later.)

Black Boy

A marvelous autobiography about growing up under segregation. My favorite part is when our black and bookworm hero plots and schemes and finds a way to get books from a whites-only library. You gotta love that. No wait, I mean you gotta hate that. Oh, you know what I mean.

Novel on Yellow Paper Or Work It Out for Yourself

Utterly unique. I was so charmed by Smith's idiosyncratic voice that I couldn't stop reading. But she wasn't kidding with that alternate title. I want to get as many people as possible to read this book so that eventually someone might explain the ending to me.
