Farm City The Education of an Urban Farmer
by
Novella Carpenter

"Farm City", by Novella Carpenter, is quite an interesting book. I'd casually heard of the title and since urban and farming, to me at least, seemed an oxymoron, I read it to see the hype about the book. She's a very hardworking, creative, and self-sufficient woman. She is a bit quirky, but who isn't? Kudos to her for going after the simpler life, although in an urban environment. I personally would not eat or raise neither pigs nor rabbits for food, but she did this successfully (chickens also) all the while holding down job(s), and tending to a large city garden. Well written account.

Shanghai Tunnel

Love it for the historical aspect of the book, and the time and place setting. However, the book does lack some character development. Also, noticed several typos in the text which were not caught by any of the book's editors. That kind of got on my nerves a bit. Overall, a good book read though.

Scrabble Wordbook
by

an excellent wordbook for use by any Scrabble player. The number of possible words to make by adding on to either the beginning or the end of an existing word is just mindboggling. One could sit the entire day, just looking through this book, and reading the thousands of available words capable of being played in the game.

Pontoon

Garrison Keillor

Another hysterical, crack-up-laughing novel about some more of the folks of Lake Wobegon, by the expert, one of a kind storyteller, Garrison Keillor. You will not be able to put this one down until you have finished it! You just got to love those wacky, funny ol' people of his (and his fans' ) imagination. ...

Possible Side Effects
by
Augusten Burroughs
TDB
, April 06, 2008
"Possible Side Effects" is a hysterical, funny collection of various short stories from the author of "Running With Scissors". Some of these are so crazy, you'd swear they were totally made up! Most are extremely funny, with a few emotional and a bit sad. Was glad that the book is a good mix of stories from his childhood, as well as his life as an adult living in NYC. An excellent book choice for laughter. A warning though, it does contain "adult content and language" in some of the short stories. Also, the audiobook is read by the author. So funny.

West of Kabul, East of New York: An Afghan American Story
by
Tamim Ansary and Mir Tamim Ansary
TDB
, March 09, 2008
The writer Tamim Ansary writes the book very vividly, and makes you feel there, especially if you listen to the audiobook, which he narrates himself. Makes you appreciate his family and their differences/choices from one another, and also to love the warmth of the Afghani people. An excellent autobiography/biography. ...Interesting tidbit I hadn't previously known, was that he had ever lived here in Portland and even attended Reed College, back in his "hippy" days. (These are just briefly mentioned though). Overall a great read.

Excellent book, so many ideas which will inspire one to want to do more for others, which really benefits all of us, in the end. You can also listen to the audiobook, to hear our former President reading this book aloud. A great read.

Love & Consequences

thank God, her sister had the decency and integrity to come forward, when some siblings might not have done so. .... Also, (rhetorical ? here) why couldn't this "author" have just listed this book as a work of fiction to begin with? Seems this would have been much better for everyone, her, publisher, readers, everyone else involved instead of trying to deceive so many? ...
