Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

A Secret Woman
by
Rose Solari
Renee Weitzner
, December 06, 2021
Rose Solari is a beautiful writer. Her words echo across the page and help the reader visualize and feel what the main character experiences. We see the main character, Louise Terry, in her many roles: daughter, artist, lover and revel in her exploration of how she handles whatever comes her way; we learn what it means to be a secret woman... I could not put this book down.

Paris Wife
by

Intriguing in its depiction of the relationship between Ernest Hemingway and his wife, Hadley, this book also reflects on the life in Paris in the twenties and thirties of the 20th century. It also shows many of the themes (loss, betrayal) that appear in Hemingway's own fiction. I could not put this book down. It's that good.

Just Kids

Patti Smith

This elegeaic ode to Robert Mapplethorpe won my heart at the get-go. I have always admired Patti Smith and her body of work. This memoir so accurately captures New York at the time of their meeting, the New York of clubs and poetry and the Beats in their later years...it was a joy to see, really see, the progression that the two young artists make in terms of their mutual and individual growth. Thank you, Patti, for this delightful prose poem, an ode to your friend, Robert, and the life you shared, if only for a while.....

We Beat the Street How a Friendship Pact Led to Success
by
Sampson Davis
Renee Weitzner
, October 16, 2010
We Beat the Street is a powerful book. It relates the lives of three very good friends who pledge that their friendship will survive no matter what and that they will succeed. True to their word, despite tremendous difficulties, it does. They each manage to go to college, medical school residency and have now become doctors. Each doctor relates each chapter, bringing the reader right along. We suffer along with the writer, and we applaud when all goes well. Their story is an inspiration to young people, especially, and a treasure to the rest of us!
