Harper C.:
Five Book Friday: Uncanny Graphic Novels
(0 comment)
We are in the thick of winter here in the Pacific Northwest, which means it's dark, damp, and chilly. Rather than escaping to stories with warmer, brighter climates, I personally want nothing more than to dive deep into gothic and uncanny fiction as the wind rattles my windows at night...

90 Minutes in Heaven a True Story of Death & Life

The first part of this book is a glorious, hope-filled account of what heaven is. The rest of the book is a story of the strength and courage that Don Piper had after his accident and through his recovery. I would recommend this book to anyone who thinks that they may, at some time, die.

30% ghost story, plus 30% mystery, plus 30% friendship and humor, add in 10% fluff....you get 100% delightful little story. I am so glad I stumbled across it. Listed as a "series debut," I would gladly pick up another installment of these fun characters.

Nicholas Flamel 01 Alchemyst The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel

This was a great little book! It was recommended for people who'd enjoyed Harry Potter, and while it didn't have quite the same magnetism, it was a good read. I had no qualms passing it on to my 7 year old, since while it still had the battles of good vs. evil, it didn't go quite so deeply into the dark edginess that some of the Potter books have. The fact that some of the characters are historical makes it even more fun. We are eagerly awaiting the next installment in "The Magician."
