Mr Terupt 01 Because of Mr Terupt

This is a fabulous book! This is my first year teaching and I chose to read this book during read aloud time to my 5th graders on a friend's recommendation. My students LOVED this book and couldn't get enough. Every time I stopped they let out genuine groans and pleas for me to continue. This books is written from the perspective of several students in a fifth grade class that has it's share of problems. Though the year, the issues between students continue to grow until they come to a head in one big disaster. The rest of the book shows how each character changes and grows because of the event. The characters are genuine and well written. I have heard some critiques that a few characters were more profound than average 10 and 11 year olds but I did not find it jarring. Hearing an example of mature thought in literature is how students can learn to express and process their own emotions, so if anything, the "profound, deep thinking characters" we're some of the most interesting. This book has humor as well as seriousness and sadness as well as joy. From the characters wide range of family situations and personalities my class was able to carry on conversations about responsibility, how we judge others, how to treat people who are different than us, how to deal with bullies (even if you are one), and I think, most importantly, how to forgive others. Due to these themes, I would recommend that a teacher or parent read the book first and be ready to discuss these themes with children so they can really understand and process all of the topics and issues raised in the book. It was also a great book to discuss literary concepts such as plot points, points of view in writing, and character arches and changes. But best way to tell that my kids loved this book; one of my students who is not a big reader, checked the book out from the classroom library when we had finished it and re-read the whole thing on his own over the Christmas break! It just gives me warm fuzzies inside! Most highly recommend!

Ender's Shadow: Ender's Shadow 1

I had already read Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead and decided to give Ender's Shadow a try. It is a fantastic book! I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoyed Ender's Game. It is written from the character Bean's point of view and although the events are the same, it is a completely different story but with the same feeling as Ender's Game. I loved Bean in Ender's Game and so this was so much fun to read and get to learn SO much more about him and Ender's world.
