Seriously the best book I read in 2012. Like a classic Woody Allen movie set at the Algonquin Round Table, I fell in love with old New York, the prose, and Henry Schiller's piano. Great book.

A great book of a New York rarely seen anymore. Julian Tepper takes us through the New York of Dorothy Parker and Woody Allen, a place where the piano bar is the only place to be on a weeknight, where good drinks and good conversation go hand in hand. Henry Schiller, is the relatable hero of this tale, a hero who is not always right, but who is often scared and reacts accordingly. Tepper's novel is a wonderful debut. Highly reccomended.

Marriage Plot

A great book that takes on, not just the semiotics craze of the 80s, but also tackles The Marriage Plot in a new and exciting way. I didn't think Eugenides was going to pull off the ending, but by some miracle, it was perfect.

A great, sweeping novel about the Vietnam war from a perspective we haven't seen before. The language is beautiful, the description is astounding and story keeps you in rapt attention. I could not put this book down.

Down & Derby The Insiders Guide to Roller Derby
by

This is essential reading for anyone who loves, has loved, or is about to love Roller Derby. Whether you watched it on TV in the 70s or regularly come home with bruises from the latest bout, this book has it all. It's accessible, fun, funny and a wholly informative look at what derby was, is and where it's going (total world domination, I hope). Interspersed with interviews from real derby girls, the book looks at the history of derby, the rules, the names and my favorite part, the derby commandments. Plus, there's a quiz to find out if you are a derby girl (or guy) waiting to happen. What more could you want?!?
