CSI meets a real treatment of Vampires. Del Toro and Hogan treat the Vampire-mythos with all the love and care of a real fan of the occult. The attention to detail and preservation of traditional conventions is astounding. Excellent characterization, a blistering pace and a well-crafted mystery/suspense element, make this one of the best if not the best horror title in ages. The first in a trilogy, which is promising to be a spell-binding and engrossing as the first installment.

Old Man Logan Wolverine
by
Mark Millar

Epic from beginning to end. A masterful tale of deception, deceit and realization. Millar and McNiven are at their game. If you thought nothing could top Civil War, think again. Brilliantly paced, beautifully illustrated, a modern masterwork of the genre. A brilliant portrait of a broken man, his fear and his attempt at redemption.

Other Evolve Or Die Black Spider Man
by
J Michael Straczynski
James Samson
, January 31, 2008
75% amazing, 25% mediocre, three-quarters great storytelling and art and the other quarter just disappointing. The Marvel Knights portion of this collection is perhaps some of the worse would-be comic storytelling ever, and the art is a some of the worst anime one could imagine. If you can push past the "manga" and focus of the other portion of this book, the story really is worth the read.

This is it true believers, the end of the phenomenal Todd McFarlane/Peter David run on the Green/Grey Goliath. Including the most famous Wolverine/Hulk battle, classic graphic novel storytelling. Great story, great art, great all-around.

Fallen Son The Death Of Captain America
by
Leinil Francis Yu

A tribute to a legend. Though fictional, Captain America's death is still a profound loss, a symbol of justice and freedom. This tome details the emotions of the citizens of the Marvel universe, as they progress through the stages of grieving, culminating in the Captain's moving funeral.

Captain America Omnibus 1
by
Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting and Michael Lark
James Samson
, January 31, 2008
This omnibus collecting Ed Brubaker's run is by far the best collection to be released in the last 10 years. This phenomenal tale redefines what a graphic novel should be, moving, awe-inspiring and thrilling. This novel paints a portrait of a man who needs to be a symbol to many and a hero to all, yet with an underlying internal conflict. This is a must read for anyone, period.

Absolute Batman the Long Halloween
by
Jeph Loeb
James Samson
, November 07, 2007
Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale's first masterpiece, presented in this one volume is phenomenal. A true detective narrative, with an interesting take on Two-Face's origin that leaves you questioning any politicians motives. Sale's art is a vivid representation of the exact feel Loeb has for the Dark Knight. Not to be missed!

Batman Gothic
by
Grant Morrison, Jan
James Samson
, November 07, 2007
Grant Morrison outdoes himself here in this volume, an early tale which recounts Batman's past. Rich in history and a dark tone throughout the book, makes this an extremely compelling tale, of not only Wayne's past but of a religious villain. This volume is deserving of a special place in any graphic novel collection.

Alex Ross - Mark Waid, Ross is knowing for painting the most vivid imagery ever brought to comics, Waid known to write some of the most compelling and moving stories of our time. Batman Arkham Aslyum a Serious House on Serious Earth 15th Anniversary Edition
by
Grant Morrison, Dave McKean
James Samson
, November 01, 2007
A tale of a twisted mind. Every time that Bruce Wayne places someone in the asylum, one asks themselves how much different is a man in a bat suit than those who are locked up in straight-jackets? This book explores Batman's psychology and the art is quite reflective of this twisted tale. An excellent read and is filled with some of the most interesting Batman imagery to come along, and possibly some of Grant Morrison's most exciting ideas. A must-read for any one who ever wondered what goes on behind the mask or is just looking for a different take on the dark knight.

Guardian Devil Daredevil 01
by
Kevin Smith
James Samson
, October 24, 2007
Kevin Smith is not only an entertaining director and screenplay writer; he is also one of the most interesting writer's when it comes to comics. This book is in my view, is Smith's greatest literary accomplishment, a book that not only addresses topics rarely touched on in the form, but crafts this tale in a way that not only moves you, but forces you to want to re-read it. The unison of Kevin Smith's smart, and well guided storytelling in unison with the moody, dark and atmospheric art of Quesada and Palmiotti paint an intricate portrait of Hell's Kitchens' hero that is not to be missed.

Spawn Collection 01
by
Todd McFarlane
James Samson
, October 24, 2007
Any comic fan who grew up in the 90's was sure to have taken notice of McFarlane's Spawn. Even all these years later, these first tales are a suprisingly good read, amazingly detailed art and some very gripping first stories. Even includes one of Frank Miller's Spawn tales. A must for any fan of McFarlane's early work on Spider-Man, or a fan of edgy creative writing.

Marvels - Kurt Busiek, one of the most gifted writers in comics brings a ficitous world to life, seen from the eye of by-standers. If you ever wondered what life would be like if there were such "super"-heroes. Beautifully illustrated and painted by Alex Ross, this is not to be missed.

Absolute Batman Hush
by
Jeph Loeb
James Samson
, October 18, 2007
Jeph Loeb is an amazingly gifted writer, this goes without saying and the same can be said for the pencils of Jim Lee, but the marriage of the two here, is flawless, a true page turner. Every page is filled with clever dialogue, a great story and some of the most memorable moments from any book of the last ten years. They have truly outdone themselves here, with nods to old continuity and a non-stop pace. This is not to be missed. A true classic which may even stir some controversy amongst those who read it. Enjoy.
