This is THE American Novel. Come on, it's the Great Gatsby. Beautiful, an amazing economy of words, brilliant. Anyone with any interest in American literature really must read this book. It is absolutely the cornerstone.

Son of the Ripper!
by

A bookstore employee recommended this to me, which I usually take as pretty high praise, and I was not disappointed. Son of the Ripper!, set in an uptight Massachusetts town in the 1920s has a very old-fashioned sensibility. It's highly mannered, and incredibly charming. Sure, the mystery is engaging, and there were more than a handful of laugh-out-loud moments, but the overall tone is just so rosy and pleasant, none of that seems to matter. When everything is neatly wrapped up in the final pages, I turned each page with a sinking sense of dread that it was about to be over, and I was left hoping for this to become a series.
