Renee Macalino Rutledge: Powell's Q&A: Renee Macalino Rutledge, author of 'One Hundred Percent Me' (0 comment)
Could you describe your latest book, One Hundred Percent Me?
A little girl is used to hearing questions about her looks all the time. "Where are you from?" "What are you?" These questions are a constant reminder from others that she is different. As she embraces her identity and culture, she teaches others that she belongs, that the differences they notice are part of what make her unique, special, and herself....

    Pond by Claire-Louise Bennett
    LuluReads, November 18, 2016
It is hard to describe what makes this book so beautiful, but the writing feels so personal and unselfconscious. If we were to write down our inner thoughts without censoring them for another to see. The wilderness of our internal dialogue.

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
    LuluReads, October 21, 2014
I'm not sure what made me pick this up because I have consciously been staying away from sad novels. A story about two teenagers with cancer - that has sad written all over it. But I did start it, and it was delightful. It's one of those stories that evokes a number of different emotions, so there's sadness, but also laughter, respect, and gratitude.

Enchanted April by Elizabeth Von Arnim
    LuluReads, November 05, 2013
Delightful! In this weather, who doesn't want to read about an April vacation in Italy? The character descriptions are insightful and witty, and although it was written in the 1920's these people could easily be family members, co-workers, or friends you have today. The story is crisp, not sappy, and I especially love the pokes and jabs at piety and high morals.

Gluten Free Girl Every Day by Shauna James Ahern
    LuluReads, July 29, 2013
This is a great book to make gluten-free cooking less intimidating. It often looks expensive and time-consuming, but it doesn't have to be! These are great recipes for venturing out beyond packaged mixes (although we all love Bob's Red Mill!) I don't care less about food because I don't eat wheat; I care more about it. And it's obvious from a book like this, that the author and her family do as well.

Cloud Atlas A Novel by David Mitchell
    LuluReads, January 02, 2013
I can't believe it took me so long to read this book, after hearing recommendations for years. I was spurred to read it before the movie came out earlier this year. Beautiful writing that only gets better as the book goes along leads into a story that is bigger than the sum of its parts. I was immediately lost in the novel whenever I picked the book back up; it took me no time at all to join the story again. Escapist literature in the best possible way!

    Quiet by Susan Cain
    LuluReads, August 13, 2012
There are some very valuable insights for everyone regarding the care and feeding of introverts, especially the section on communication and conflict resolution. At other times, I think the author overstates the plight of introverts in general society. After starting the book, I told my husband I wished I had come across a book like this years ago.
