Box Of Delights
by
John Masefield

My father-in-law read this aloud to his children many years ago. It has long been unavailable in an unabridged edition. All the children (now in their 50s) wax rhapsodic about this. I can't wait to surprise them with this.

Quick Vegetarian Pleasures: More Than 175 Fast, Delicious, and Healthy Meatless Recipes
by
Jeanne Lemlin
frugalscholar
, February 11, 2009
Lemlin is not as well-known as other vegetarian cookbook authors. But this is as good a book as you could hope for. Everything is good; everything is easy. When my daughter was teaching herself to cook, she used this book. The BEST!

Use What You Have Decorating
by
Lauri Ward
frugalscholar
, February 09, 2009
This has been around for a while, but, given the new financial realities, it's good to know how to use what you have. The pictures in the book are awful! But if you do what Ward says (rearrange furniture into U-shape, use pairs, etc), your room will look better. Truly worth owning.

Enough.: True Measures of Money, Business, and Life
by
John C. Bogle
frugalscholar
, February 08, 2009
Not an absolute must-read, but a lovely book nonetheless. Bogle created the Vanguard Funds, whose shareholder-owned structure means more for investors and less for him. His ethics and good sense come through in this book, as he ponders what is "enough." Given the recent economic meltdown and the revelations about members of the financial industry, Bogle reminds us that there is ANOTHER way to do business and to live one's life.

A beautiful book about family, history, loss, love ...this reminds me of the earlier Machine Dreams, which also centers on a sibling relationship. A moving, powerful book.

My Life in France

Delightful. You will really get a sense of what made Julia Julia: hard work, curiosity, total lack of self-pity. You will also learn how important her husband, Paul Child, was to her success.

Essentials of Classic Italian Cooking
by
Marcella Hazan

, February 02, 2009
This is probably the one book I'd keep if I had to get rid of all my cookbooks save one. Everything is easy, delicious, well-tested. Marcella's palate never falters. Truly a masterpiece. If you don't know how to cook, start with this. You will have many successes.

Each Peach Pear Plum

One of our family favorites. Fun to "I spy," but be warned, one is very difficult to find! Both my kids memorized this book from re-reading--the best testimonial of all. A keeper, worth owning in hardcover.

Happy Birthday Moon
by
Frank Asch
frugalscholar
, February 02, 2009
Truly a masterpiece. The bear talks to the moon. What he hears is an echo of his own words. You have to read this to see, but the message is that giving is better than receiving and that the world gives back to us what we give. Just beautiful. A favorite we will keep forever.

Something From Nothing
by
Phoebe Gilman
frugalscholar
, February 02, 2009
One of my favorite children's books. This is from an old tale about a coat that becomes a vest and, eventually, a button, and finally, a story! Truly a wonderful lesson in frugality. The illustrations are great. As we watch Joseph's family grow and change, we also see the mouse family below the floor. They too are making something from nothing. A Jewish-themed book. Even the mice have Hebrew lessons!

This is one of those life-changing books everyone should read. It's all about consciousness and conscious living. the authors have you figure out your true "hourly wage."
