Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Gods Middle Finger Into the Lawless Heart of the Sierra Madre
by

I would imagine that what actually happened to the hapless Mr Grant would be that those Mexican hillbillies had come into possession of an advance copy of "God's Middle Finger" and realizing the slander which was about to be perpetuated on them, decided to they had no alternative but to take rapid preventive action. Mr Grant is an idiot. Of course, if you wander around in a place like the Sierra Madre peeping like a lost gosling, you will attract the criminal element. Same thing could happen to you north of 125th. Get a brain. Jan VanDenBerg

Gods Middle Finger Into the Lawless Heart of the Sierra Madre

This book is hyperbole. I haven't read it yet but I was married to a man from Suaripa, a small town high in the Sierra Madre, for five years, met his entire family and community and visited there repeatedly. The town was very remote and self-contained. His family owned thousands of hectares of high desert, used for cattle range. It's dangerous, yes, but it is not nearly so dangerous as this writer lets on. Yes, there are drugs and corruption like crazy. But there are a lot of nice, law-abiding, decent people, too. Everyone is very religous and the Catholic Church exerts a strong influence for ethical behavior. Jan VanDenBerg
