Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. 1Q84: 3 Volume Boxed Set
by
Haruki Murakami
lberinger
, January 09, 2013
An engrossing page-turner, all 1,000+ of them, filled with the most intricate intimacies of the human spirit. Fact and fantasy entwine and actually affect and alter each another, just as the wholly mismatched stranger-characters do. The two worlds of 1984 and the mysterious 1Q84 foreshadow much of our own present-day anomie and alienation, a feeling that grows deep inside you as you read along yet is leavened by Murakami's signature attention to telling personal detail and internal monologues. I would add that I'm especially happy with this three-volume presentation; I doubt I would have picked up such a huge book and carried it with me everywhere I went until I finished this remarkable story.

Sorrow Mountain The Journey Of A Tibet
by
Ani Pachen
lberinger
, March 25, 2008
China has just called for the "patriotic education" of Tibetans. To understand what that really means, read about Ani Pachen's patriotic education at the hands of the Chinese decades ago. Unforgettable. It's also simply an amazing, inspiring autobiography, whether you're following developments in Tibet or not. I started reading this book, coincidentally, just as the latest conflicts and protests started to hit the news, and it has enriched the big picture for me immeasurably. Anyone interested in what's going on there now, and what has been happening there for a very, very long time, will not fail to deeply appreciate this incredibly strong woman's story.
