Colony Of Unrequited Dreams
by
Wayne Johnston
mona
, April 01, 2014
The history of Newfoundland may not be at the top of everyone's must-learn list, but this novel goes beyond that. Johnston's writing is so beautiful that even politics are made enthralling. I'm sorry I didn't discover him sooner.

A beautiful voice recounting one of the most horrific stories I've read in a long time. I respect her writing of this book as an immense feat of courage and determination. Many of us would have crumbled.

Tomorrow to Be Brave: A Memoir of the Only Woman Ever to Serve in the French Foreign Legion
by
Susan Travers
mona
, December 28, 2012
It's hard to put into words what a powerful book this is. While it is a well written autobiography and history, it is so much more than that. Susan Travers was an amazing woman and her experiences both before and during WWII were more interesting than any fiction. She is an inspiration. This book should be required reading for school children and adults alike.

Drift the Unmooring of American Military Power
by
Rachel Maddow

this book has everything we would expect from rachel: intelligence, humor, honesty, and depth. it also leaves you troubled and thinking about not how we got here, but how we fix our comfort level with perpetual war.

Harpo Speaks

Harpo Marx

after a lifetime of enjoying the films of the marx brothers, it was such a joy to dive into the life of harpo, my favorite. his writing style was perfectly conversational and makes you feel like you are following him through his life. fascinating characters and events kept me awake night after night.

My Kitchen Wars: A Memoir
by
Betty Fussell
mona
, June 19, 2010
I have to say, this book took me by complete surprise. There are so many food diaries/memoirs/biographies on the shelves that I thought this was just another "the first time i tasted (enter food here)..." book. Boy, was I wrong. Not that there's no food in it, but food only serves as a side note. This is about a life, and what a life. And what a writer. There is no warm and fuzzy here - it is cold, harsh, painful, angry, and absolutely fascinating. It sounds too simplistic to say this, but it is a great read.

Such an odd little book...it was a slog at first, but once i recognized her sense of humor and felt comfortable in the time and place, i was hooked.

Burning Marguerite
by
Elizabeth Inness-Brown

this book proved to me that reading reviews and the blurb on the cover often mislead. i have had this book for a while, but just picked it up a few weeks ago...and didn't want to put it down. it is so much richer than i imagined. her writing is comfortable even when the subject is difficult. her characters are all perfectly believable, and the story is brilliant as it crosses decades and miles. i look forward to reading this again when it starts to fade from my memory.

I feared that taking on Lear and Shakespeare would lead to a stilted or uncomfortable tale, but Christopher Moore has amazed me yet again with his wit, filth, and imagination. I love this book.

You Suck
by
Christopher Moore
mona
, January 10, 2007
hearing that a sequel is in the works usually makes my stomach turn, but not when it is flowing from the hand of christopher moore. i wouldn't even term this a sequel - it is merely a continuation of "bloodsucking fiends" with the same wit, imagination, and brilliant language as the first. he never disappoints.

a fascinating book and perfect for this time of year. although she was always a little tight and formal in her writing, this is both entertaining and informative.

Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Friend
by
Christopher Moore
mona
, August 24, 2006
i still don't understand why this book, and christopher moore himself, weren't burned at the stake. has he succeeded where so many others have failed in flying below the radar of the religious right? in any case, i'm grateful that he wrote this and that i read it. i find him hilarious, imaginative, curious, and comfortable. and this book did not disappoint in any way. if you need to disappear from everyday life, pick up this or any of his books. enjoy.
