Data a Love Story How I Gamed Online Dating to Meet My Match by Amy Webb
    310screenwriter, June 20, 2013
The perfect neurotic nerd-girl romantic comedy, and I mean that as the highest compliment. Amy Webb is brilliant, funny, accessible... Equal parts Lucille Ball, Larry David, and Mark Zuckerberg, if she were still online I think *I* would try to date her. I'm in love.

Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender
    310screenwriter, January 30, 2013
I adore this book and have recommended it to everyone I know. Aimee Bender writes in such a beautiful, descriptive way, without ever feeling too flowery. And though the story involves a bit of fantasy, the emotions are completely real. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll be delighted.

    Dark Places by Gillian Flynn
    310screenwriter, September 07, 2012
These days it seems like the books that I HAVE to read -- the ones that grab me from the start, that I sit down to read a chapter and lose hours to, that I'm willing to stay up past my bedtime to get just a little more of -- are few and far between. But "Dark Places" did all that and more, with haunting prose, complicated and fascinating characters, and a compelling mystery that was in turns gruesome and heartbreaking and unfolded at just the right pace to allow time to ponder the implications of such a thing in the real world, but also keep me turning the pages.

Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender
    310screenwriter, January 01, 2012
This novel was so unlike anything else I'd ever read. I related to each character, at each stage of life, and found myself alternately laughing and crying, and thinking about them for weeks afterward. Aimee Bender has such an amazing way of capturing the smallest moments, and of describing them in ways that are both recognizable and uncannily beautiful.

Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender
    310screenwriter, June 16, 2011
This is the first book in a year? Two years, perhaps? That I absolutely haven't been able to put down, that's kept me up at night - in the best way. Aimee Bender has the most amazing way of articulating observations about people that ring so true as to feel instantly familiar, and yet the turns of phrase are so beautiful that the observations feel special and rare. One of those books that you feel a little sad to reach the end.

Coffee Break Screenwriter by Pilar Alessandra
    310screenwriter, August 23, 2010
I was worried that this would be simply a rehash of tips that I'd already heard in various lectures and classes, but I couldn't be more wrong. Not only does this book contain everything you need to know to quickly develop an idea into a complete screenplay, even better it *doesn't* contain anything that isn't useful and directly on point -- saving you confusion, headache, and time. If you want to write a screenplay, use Save the Cat and Coffee Break Screenwriter to guide you and you will succeed.

Indefensible One Lawyers Journey Into the Inferno of American Justice by David Feige
    310screenwriter, February 26, 2010
An intimate look at the life of a public defender. It's not glamorous, but it is fascinating. I wanted to read it again as soon as the last page was turned.

How Can You Defend Those People by Mickey Sherman
    310screenwriter, February 26, 2010
Mickey Sherman is a character! You'll be entertained as much by his personality as by the behind-the-scenes look at the world of criminals and courtroom drama. If you've EVER enjoyed an episode of Law & Order, you'll love this book.

Defending the Damned: Inside a Dark Corner of the Criminal Justice System by Kevin Davis
    310screenwriter, February 26, 2010
A fascinating behind-the-scenes look at criminal court and the Public Defender's office. Written with an entertaining voice; not at all dry non-fiction. If you've EVER enjoyed an episode of Law & Order, you will love this book.

Writers Coach The Complete Guide to Writing Strategies That Work by Jack R Hart, Jack Hart
    310screenwriter, November 20, 2008
Even if you don't think of yourself as a writer, some part of your life likely requires you to write. This book is that perfect combination of inspiration and practical advice for anyone who writes anything-- newsletters, memos, articles, novels, even lectures or screenplays. I've flagged and dog-eared this book. It will definitely go on my permanent reference shelf.

Last Single Woman In America A Memoir by Cindy Guidry
    310screenwriter, October 10, 2008
It's funny because it's TRUE. Everything she's written here about living, working, and dating in L.A. is hilariously accurate and had me quoting entire paragraphs to friends. This book will go on my permanent Top 10 list for sure.

    Silver Bear by Haas, Derek
    310screenwriter, September 19, 2008
Amazing. A friend gave me his copy, but for some reason the title didn't grab me, so it sat on my dresser for almost two months before I even cracked it. And then I read it in one sitting. It's a relatively short novel, sure. But I could. not. put. it. down. The writing it tight and mesmerizing. Highly, highly recommended.

Save the Cat Goes to the Movies The Screenwriters Guide to Every Story Ever Told by Snyder, Blake
    310screenwriter, June 22, 2008
After the original Save the Cat! book, this is the book you'll reach for most often when writing your screenplay. No joke, you will come back to it again and again, every time you write a script. It's an indispensable reference for all ability levels. Totally worth the money. And don't loan it out; you'll never get it back. (Trust me on that one.)
