Catherine the Great: Portrait of a Woman by Robert K Massie is a detailed and intimate portrait of a fascinating person. It is beautifully written with scenes that come alive on the page. As I read it, I could picture the events as if I were watching them unfold. It is easily the best book I have read this year.

An outstanding novel, sometimes difficult to keep all the characters straight but one that you cannot stop reading for its entire 600+ pages.
